Financial Planning to be Next Topic at Alzheimer's Association Caregiver Workshop

The Alzheimer’s Association, WNY Chapter will hold their next Caregiver Workshop on Tuesday, August 23, 2011, from 12 – 1:30 p.m. at their office located at 2805 Wehrle Drive, Suite 6 in Williamsville.

The program, “Financial Planning” will be presented by guest speaker Kathleen M. Flynn, MBA, Financial Advisor at Waddell & Reed, Inc.  The workshop will teach you how a comprehensive financial planning process can help you prepare for the inevitable transitions in your life, whether you are currently focused on accumulation, or need to prepare for distribution, preservation or transfer.

The program is $5 and a lunch is included. Reservations are required and can be made by calling the Western New York Chapter at 1.800.272.3900.

Farmers & Artisans to Host Author and Chef Jake Brach

Chef Jake Brach, regional culinary manager for Rich Products and author of the book “The Sustainable Chef — Cooking with the Farmers of New York State,” will be signing copies of his book from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, August 25, at Farmers & Artisans, 78 East Spring St., Williamsville. Guests that evening will also be treated to food demonstrations and will have an opportunity to sample recipes featured in Brach’s book.

In “The Sustainable Chef,” Brach tells the story of eight small family farms, sharing recipes from each and highlighting beautiful photos from around the state. The book would make a great gift for any cooking or food enthusiast. 

Erie County Transfers Park to Town of Clarence

CLARENCE, NY - Erie County Thursday formally placed the future of an undeveloped, natural park located in the hands of the Town of Clarence.

The town is now responsible for the maintenance and operations of Beeman Creek Park. The transfer will give Clarence officials the ability to develop the park, as well as manage drainage issues within the park as they see fit.

"The acquisition of Beeman Creek Park further demonstrates the Town of Clarence's commitment to protect green space," said town Supervisor Scott Bylewski. "It will be cherished by generations as we strive to achieve our vision of protecting our rural and agricultural character."

During the cold winter months, dogs are unable to enjoy the outdoor activities that put into use their natural senses to play, run and fetch. To protect themselves and their dogs from the frigid air, many dog owners avoid the outdoors — only bringing their pets outside for a brief walk, or to load them in and out of the car for appointments. Unfortunately this inactive way of living becomes the "norm" for dogs, and inhibits their intuitions.

National Grid Joins Effort to Raise Awareness of National 811 Dig Safely Day

The digging up of underground utilities is a significant and avoidable cause of gas and electric outages that can result in serious injuries and disrupt power delivery to neighborhoods. Today, August 11, (8/11) National Grid is pleased to a part of a statewide a safety and awareness campaign  encourage do-it-yourselfers and construction contractors to call 8-1-1 to request the marking of underground facilities prior to digging.

In upstate New York, National Grid has joined 200 organizations including utility companies, municipal governments and contractors in signing “The 811 Promise,” a written pledge that commits to safety procedures with Dig Safely New York, Inc., a regional effort to raise awareness for safety around digging projects.

Clarence Readers Win Battle of the Books

A Statement Released by the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library System

The Buffalo & Erie County Public Library System is pleased to announce that two teams from the Clarence Library took first and second place in this year’s Battle of the Books competition held last Saturday, August 6 at Erie Community College South.

More than 250 young people, representing 21 Buffalo and Erie County Public Libraries, showed their quick wit by answering challenging questions about five pre-selected books they all had read.  Eligible participants, entering grades six through nine, have participated in study sessions with their team members in local libraries for the past few months.
