New Lancaster Park Honors Veterans, Heroes

LANCASTER, N.Y. - Russell Salvatore bought an acre and a half of land in front of his new restaurant and hotel on Transit Road in Lancaster so no one would build in front of him. He had originally wanted to put a shopping plaza there. But he said instead, he got the idea to create a park for people to visit.

The sod was just laid down Thursday on what he calls "Patriots and Heroes Park". There are benches and old fashioned street lamps. And by the end of the month, a monument will be there, dedicated to veterans and heroes in our everyday lives.

2 On Your Side's Josh Boose asked Salvatore how he chose the name.

"I was thinking about the tragedy that happened with the plane crash and all the veterans and I got a good friend by the name of Charlie and we came up with it," he said. "We just said doesn't "patriots and heroes" sound nice? It sounds beautiful! We're going to have a monument made and we're going to have the American Legion come in and just dedicate it to the patriots and the heroes of the country for God sakes."

Salvatore says that dedication will take place at the end of this month. He would also like to have events there, like a "bring your dogs on Thursdays" type of event to start it off.
