Nichols School Student Composer Wins Honorable Mention at Competition

Nichols School freshman, Jason Zhou, won an Honorable Mention in the First Annual Persis Vehar Competition for Excellence in Composition. Corinne Damerau-Best, Nichols' Director of Choral and General Music for the Middle School, encouraged Jason to submit the sonata he wrote in her composition class as an eighth grader last year.

An event will be held at Canisius College on Tuesday, March 29 at 7:30 p.m. and includes a program at the Montante Cultural Center. Jason will have the opportunity to share information about his piano composition and himself. In addition, a CD recording of his work will be made at the Montante Cultural Center and provided to him following the performance.

Acclaimed composer, Persis Parshall Vehar (ASCAP), is the Composer-in-Residence at Canisius College; she recently contacted Jason to congratulate him on the honor of being selected. As Canisius College Composer-in-Residence, she promotes the college as a center for creativity by providing public lectures on the art of composing and by offering opportunities for area high school and college age students to compose and premiere their compositions each year.
