Teens & self-esteem: Your teen’s self-esteem dependent on you

Teens & self-esteem: Your teen’s self-esteem dependent on you

So what is self-esteem, more importantly low self-esteem? Low self-esteem is a distorted view of self that affects many beliefs and assumptions that one has about oneself. Low self-esteem generally forms in childhood and is usually fully set by age 8 to 10.

In 2008 Dove (yes the soap) released Real Girls, Real Pressure: A National Report on the State of Self-Esteem. The Dove Self-Esteem Fund commissioned the report and learned that there was at the time and may still be a self-esteem crisis in the country. This crisis affects every aspect of a young girl’s life such as looks, performance, and relationships.

Could "Ungrowth" Be Healthy for WNY?

BUFFALO, N.Y. - The U.S. Census Bureau recently released results of the 2010 census for New York, and the numbers show that population in all eight Western New York counties continues to decline. The City of Buffalo lost 10.7% of its population since the 2000 census, down to 261,310. Erie County’s population (919,040) is down 3.3%.

Local media unanimously reported this decline in population as a negative. (See the complete WGRZ report here.) Erie County Executive Chris Collins has said before: "We must grow or die."

But is the news all that bad?

Maelstrom in WNY: We Are Who We Are Because of Veterans

How can we pay back Veterans for what they have given the United States? You often hear that question on this day as the various ceremonies around the community celebrate and honor those who served for their country. For some the debt owed is greater than others.

There are those Veterans who served in WW II, Korea, Vietnam, Dessert Storm, Iraqi Freedom and Afghanistan. Men and women who were in the heart of the action and have images that will haunt them until the day they die.

We have all watched the films, TV shows and read the books. There are stories of great heroism and tragic outcomes. Young men, barely out of high school put into situations that would test any ones heart and soul. Many left behind in graveyards bearing names we could not even pronounce. Then there are those who returned but left much of their selves behind.
