BOCES Secures Top 3 Taste of Buffalo Awards

West Seneca, NY (June 15, 2011) - The Taste of Buffalo presented by TOPS held its annual poster design contest for students across the area. Out of the 120 designs that were submitted, students from the Erie 1 BOCES graphic design program clinched the top three awards.

The creativity of one local high school student will be the featured design on this year’s Taste of Buffalo promotional materials. First place was awarded to Felicia Drozdowski, a senior from Williamsville North High School who is enrolled in the Erie 1 BOCES graphic design program at the Harkness Career & Technical Center. Second place was awarded to Nathan Campese, a senior from West Seneca who is enrolled in the graphic design program at Erie 1 BOCES Potter Career & Technical Center. Daequan Booker, a junior from Cheektowaga High School who is also enrolled in the BOCES graphic design program at Harkness, placed third in the contest.

The student entries from Erie 1 BOCES are considered a testament to the organization's commitment to encouraging students to gain real-world experience. Graphic design instructors Roberta Schlehr and Christine Walkowiak are excited to be celebrating another year of finalists. The 2008 Taste of Buffalo winning design was created by an Erie 1 BOCES graphic design student, Ashton Edge, and the second place design was also crafted by BOCES student Liliya Yatchuk. In 2009 a BOCES student, Cassandra Lewis, placed third in the Taste of Buffalo Contest. Last year, the second place design was created by this year's winner, Felicia Drozdowski.

A poster unveiling and presentation of awards was held during a press conference on Wednesday, June 15 at TOPS Markets on Elmwood Avenue. TOPS Markets is the main sponsor of the annual Taste of Buffalo event. This year's event will be held on July 9 and 10 on Delaware Avenue in downtown Buffalo. Over 50 restaurants, six wineries and 450,000 attendees will gather to enjoy "fun by the forkful." One of the region's signature events, the Taste of Buffalo presented by TOPS is the largest two-day food festival in the United States.

As part of the public education system, Erie 1 BOCES offers more than 25 career and technical programs to high school students in Erie County during the school day. High school students interested in learning more about how they can participate in various programs such as computer networking, computer aided drafting and graphic design should visit www.e1b.org or speak with their high school counselor.
