Off Duty Amherst Officer Makes Burglary Arrest

An alert off duty Amherst Police officer is credited with the apprehension of two residential burglary suspects. Officer Corey Brown was off duty when he observed an East Amherst man's pick up truck backed into a driveway along Transit Road near Muegel Rd.

Brown then observed Michael Codelia Sr., age 46, of Berwick Lane, and his son walking behind the house. Brown observed the youth attempting to force open a door and then both flee the scene a short time later.  The two parked in a gas station lot down the street for approximately three minutes and then returned to the residence.

Officer Brown maintained surveillance while waiting for on duty officers to arrive.  Codelia Sr fled the scene in his truck and his 16 year old son fled on foot.

The Erie County Sheriff's Office, Helicopter and New York State Police assisted in the search for the suspects.

Both were taken into custody without incident by Amherst Police officers approximately two hours later and held for arraignment. Stolen property from the Burglary was recovered by officers at the Berwick Lane address.
