Tobacco: Why all the Fuss?

Tobacco: Why all the Fuss?

Tobacco has been in the news for a few months now, with the FDA releasing its new cigarette labels to big tobacco suing the FDA. Many people have seen the commercials and know that tobacco kills but choose to smoke anyways, so why all the fuss?

Many people have a hard time believing that tobacco is an addictive drug similar to cocaine or heroin. However nicotine, which is the addictive ingredient in tobacco, is one of the most widely abused drugs in the US. In a report from the US Department of Health it states:

Earthquake Rattles Some Towns, Not Others

Earthquake Rattles Some Towns, Not Others

The effect of Tuesday's earthquake in Western New York was widespread, but not universal. People in some neighborhoods didn't notice it at all while others were left feeling queasy from the unaccustomed shaking.

Go to the WGRZ-2 On Your Side Facebook page to compare for yourself reports from places where the earthquake was felt to places where it wasn't. (Follow the posts beginning on Tuesday at about 2pm. We asked both questions and received well over 800 responses from across Western New York and beyond.)

Share your earthquake stories below. Did you even feel it? Or not? Where were you at the time? (01:51:03 PM EST.)

Any friends or relatives out of town who felt it? Where were they when it hit?

Earthquake Safety Tips

Earthquake Safety Tips

We don't get them often and many of us don't know what to do when they happen so we here at 2 Your Town have compiled a list of safety procedures to help keep you and your family safe during an earthquake/aftershock.

During an Earthquake

  • If you're indoors, stay there. Get under -- and hold onto --a desk or table, or stand against an interior wall. Stay clear of exterior walls, glass, heavy furniture, fireplaces and appliances. The kitchen is a particularly dangerous spot. If you’re in an office building, stay away from windows and outside walls and do not use the elevator.

  • If you're outside, get into the open. Stay clear of buildings, power lines or anything else that could fall on you.

  • If you're driving, move the car out of traffic and stop.

Assemblyman Dennis H. Gabryszak (D-Cheektowaga) participated in the 50th Anniversary Ceremony for the Niagara Power Project today in Lewiston, New York at the Power Vista.

"For the past 50 years, NYPA and the Power Project have been instrumental with job creation as well as economic development in our community," Assemblyman Gabryszak said. "I look forward to NYPA being a driving force in Western New York economy for years to come."

Over the past three years,$109.4 million in power has been provided to area projects. More than 31,000 local jobs were created due to hydropower harnessed by the Niagara Power Project.
