Students Invited to Free Reading and Writing Camp at Dog Ears Bookstore

 

Applications are still being accepted for a Summer Reading & Writing Camp for students ages 12 and 13 to be held Aug. 3-7 at Dog Ears Bookstore, located at 688 Abbott Road. 

This free camp, sponsored by Erie County Youth Services, will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will feature reading and writing activities, games and much more, all of which align with Common Core and New York State Standards in education. Each session is limited to 20 participants on a first-come, first-served basis.

Drums Along the Waterfront Tour of Champions Set for Aug. 2

 

Eight of the top drum corps in the world will visit Western New York on Sunday, Aug. 2, for the annual Drums Along the Waterfront Tour of Champions taking place at 7 p.m. in Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park. Scheduled to compete at the event are the Blue Devils, Carolina Crown, Phantom Regiment, Blue Stars, Santa Clara Vanguard, Cavaliers, Bluecoats and Cadets!

“After a one-year hiatus from ‘The Ralph’ due to stadium renovations, we are pleased to be back,” said Jack Gaylord Jr., organizer of the musical event. “The stadium has a rich history, not only in name but for hosting drum corps events, as three Drum Corps International World Championships and four Drums Along the Waterfront events have taken place at the Orchard Park facility.

Explore Buffalo Plans ‘Wright by the River’ Special Event

 

“Wright by the River,” a unique special event offered by Explore Buffalo, will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7, at the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Fontana Boathouse, 1 Rotary Row, Buffalo.

Participants will enjoy a midsummer evening at the Fontana Boathouse with live music, wine, beer and hors d’oeuvres as the sun sets on Lake Erie and the Niagara River. The Fontana Boathouse is one of the best places in Western New York to watch the sunset. Throughout the evening, the Buffalo Maritime Center will offer short cruises on the Black Rock Channel aboard the Electra. Also open to tour will be the historic West Side Rowing Club, adjacent to the Fontana Boathouse.

Support Classes for Caregivers to be Offered at Annunciation

 

Powerful Tools for Caregivers, a series of six weekly classes aimed at assisting persons who provide care for ailing relatives or friends, will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesdays beginning Oct. 21 in Selbert Hall at the Church of the Annunciation, 7580 Clinton St., Elma.   

The frustration, depression and even anger that affect those helping an aged parent or incapacitated spouse can cloud decision-making, upset all other relationships and impact the health of the caregiver. That is what Powerful Tools for Caregivers, a national program developed by Legacy Health Systems (Portland, Oregon) and Stanford University, addresses.

Drums Along the Waterfront Celebrates WNY Competitors

 

Eight of the top drum corps in the world — who hold 42 combined Drum Corps International World Championship titles — will be visiting Western New York early next month to compete in the annual Drums Along the Waterfront competition.

“This is marching music’s major leagues,” exclaimed Jack Gaylord Jr., president of Drums Along the Waterfront. “The work, the dedication, the talent, the passion … they have made it to the very top.”
