County Clerk delivers assistance to working families and individuals file tax returns

Erie County, NY – Erie County Clerk Chris Jacobs hosted FREE tax preparation assistance to help working families and individuals filing tax returns who are claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and other tax credits at the Erie County Auto Bureau-Northtown Office.

“The time to begin filing tax returns is now, taxpayers should not wait until the last minute,” said County Clerk Jacobs. “I am pleased to take part in offering this essential service and assist taxpayers in filing accurate state and federal tax returns to ensure they receive the necessary deductions and Earned Income Tax Credit.”

While CASH coordinated this tax prep event, partners involved included Opportunity Corps members and Daemen College. The primary goal of CASH, an initiative of the United Way, is to increase the stability of low-income families by increasing access to tax credits and other benefit programs; improving financial literacy, and providing opportunities for affordable housing and other asset development.

Taxpayers are eligible for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and may also qualify for the EITC if: the maximum household income is $52,000, and applicants qualify to use 1040 EZ, 1040A or 1040 forms. “With support from the CASH Program, families who are struggling to make ends meet can benefit greatly from the EITC,” said Erie County Clerk Jacobs. “We were able to assist a number of families and individuals file their tax returns which allowed them to keep more of what they earned.”

It is not too late to apply for the 2013 Earned Income Tax Credit – the filing deadline is April 15, 2014. If you think you may qualify and you require additional information visit www.erie.gov/clerk/taxprep or contact the United Way CASH Program by calling 2-1-1.
