Frank’s Sunny Italy Hosts Traditional St. Joseph Table to Benefit Catholic Charities of Buffalo

The Frank Sclafani family, owners of Frank’s Sunny Italy restaurant in North Buffalo, will host its three-generation annual St. Joseph Table and asks only a free will contribution to take part in the feast; there is no other charge. All are invited to the traditional meal, celebrated on the Feast of St. Joseph, which will be held from 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 19 at the restaurant, 2491 Delaware Ave.

The restaurant has designated Catholic Charities of Buffalo as the recipient of all of the contributions this year.

Each year, the Sclafanis choose a local charity to benefit.

The St. Joseph Table is an Italian (more specifically Sicilian) event celebrating the principal Feast Day of St. Joseph, spouse of Mary, the mother of Jesus. The Sclafani family donates the food for the meal, their family and employees volunteer their time to prepare and serve the meal. Catholic Charities’ staff also will be on hand to greet and thank participants.

Saint Joseph is beloved among Italian-Americans, and is the patron of workers and the protector of the family.

According to legend, during a famine in Sicily many centuries ago, the townspeople prayed to St. Joseph and asked his intercession before God. Their prayers were answered and as the famine ended, a special feast of thanksgiving was held in commemoration of the Saint. Families who were wealthy prepared huge buffets, and then invited the less fortunate people of the village, especially the homeless and sick, to take part.

In this vein, Frank’s Sunny Italy has hosted a St. Joseph Table complete with the adorned altar to St. Joseph resplendent with all of the pastries and other traditional foods, including pastas, for three generations. The family purchases all of the food and all those who prepare and serve the meal volunteer their time to do so.

Catholic Charities served nearly 138,000 people in need in Western New York in 2013.
