Student Orchestra’s Fundraising Plans Pan Out

Lancaster schools’ Carnival Kids Steel Orchestra has found success in drumming up support for an area organization that helps youth battle substance abuse.

The group that plays steel drums – also known as pans – has announced that it will be sending a check for $1,700 to Kids Escaping Drugs thanks to its recent "Jam the Pan" campaign and other fundraising efforts.

The orchestra announced the campaign during its annual Island Night fundraiser last year and placed drums out to collect money during its summer concerts.

Orchestra Director Ken Kowalski thanked those who made the endeavor possible.

“Congratulations to all for the effort put forth, the commitment and dedication and your kind hearts, which will help so many in Western New York fighting addiction problems,” he said. "It is wonderful, in my opinion, that these Lancaster students have chosen to help someone other than just ourselves."

The timing of the donation comes as the annual Kids Escaping Drugs Telethon is being planned for Saturday, April 9, on Channel 2. The CKSO had hoped to perform live on the telecast, but the high school’s concert choir trip is the same day.

The fundraising goal isn’t the only success the group is finding these days. The orchestra also will be competing in the Buffalo's Most Entertaining Awards at Buffalo State College during the New York State Junior Miss Pageant on Saturday, April 2.  More than 55 applications were received by the selection committee, and five groups were accepted. The competition will begin at 6:30 p.m.

This year’s Carnival Kids Steel Orchestra Island Night fundraiser will be held from 7 to 11 p.m. Friday, March 4, and Saturday, March 5, at the Knights of Columbus, 6114 Broadway, Lancaster. Tickets are $10 per person or $18 per couple. The event will feature complimentary desserts and coffee, a Chinese auction, raffles, a cash bar and performances by the Carnival Kids.
