As the school year approaches parents everywhere are mentally preparing themselves for their “babies” going back to school. Yes parents even the transition into high school is just as scary as the first day of kindergarten, just with fewer tears. As children reach those big milestones, parents get that small tug at their heart.

The transition to high school can be difficult. Some children transition with no issues others have trouble in many areas. The NYS Parental Information & Resource Center has released a fact sheet on the transition to high school. The transition to high school is probably the most critical in that ninth grade seems to be the crucial year in terms of the high school dropout rates. More students fail ninth grade than any other grade.

Parents the best way for you to ease the transition is to be prepared, both for you and your child. Preparation is key, if your child is less anxious about the school year and is knowledgeable about where their classrooms are and where to go for help if they need it, your child will have the best chance to succeed.
