Innovative New Program Aimed at Drinking Drivers

The Resource Training Center (TRTC) has been selected by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles as one of just four authorized providers in Erie County for its Drinking Driver Program (DDP). The program allows motorists convicted in New York State of alcohol- or drug-related driving violations to qualify for a conditional license or conditional driving privileges upon completion, thereby avoiding having their license or privilege to drive revoked or suspended. It fulfills both DMV and court-mandated training requirements.

The Drinking Driver Program (DDP) is a motivational intervention to prevent alcohol and drug problems or provide early intervention. DDP emphasizes changing participants’ perceptions of the risks of drug and alcohol use and related attitudes and beliefs. Risk perception is altered through the carefully-timed presentation of both logical reasoning and emotional experience. Instructors use empathy and collaboration (methods consistent with motivational interviewing) to increase participants’ motivation to change behavior to protect what they value most in life.

Participants are guided in self-assessing their level of progression toward or into dependence or addiction. DDP also assists participants in developing a detailed plan for successfully following through with behavior change. The program includes classroom education, screening and, if warranted, evaluation and treatment using a curriculum developed by the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS).

“Many of us have a biological risk of addiction, compounded by lifestyle choices that put us at even greater risk,” says Monica A. Farrar, MS CRC; CASAC-T, program director at The Resource Training Center in Amherst. “This proven program educates people to make lower-risk choices for better outcomes and less chance for additional convictions.”

The Drinking Driver Program is conducted by TRTC’s trained and certified clinicians. Convenient class times for the seven-week, 16-hour program include evenings and weekends at TRTC’s Amherst location, 4255 Harlem Road. For more information, call (716) 983.2258 or visit www.resourcetraining.org.
