Legislator Dixon Circulates Petition for State Takeover of Medicaid Costs

Legislator Lynne Dixon announces she is hosting an online petition on her County Website to collect signatures from Erie County residents who support New York State taking over all Medicaid costs. In Erie County, the annual cost of Medicaid is more than $201 million; more than 95 percent of the property tax collected.

“The current formula used to pay for Medicaid costs is extremely unfair to all 62 counties in New York State. The state has chosen to offer non-mandated services but passes the cost onto local municipalities. Nearly every $1 collected from Erie County property taxes goes directly to pay for Medicaid,” said Legislator Dixon.

The issue, Legislator Dixon explained, is that the State chooses to offer services beyond what is mandated by the federal government and forces the cost onto counties. Non-mandated services currently offered in New York include, dental and vision care, rehabilitation, and prescription drugs.

According to a study by the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association and Hill's Pet Nutrition, dental care ranks second to weight control as the most important thing pet owners can do to increase the length of their cat or dog's life.

Proper oral care can play a key role in your pet's overall quality and length of life, by helping to avoid dental problems such as tooth infections and tooth loss among a broader range of health issues, including organ damage, strokes, emphysema, osteoporosis and diabetes.
