Bayer HealthCare LLC, Animal Health Division, this week encouraged owners of America's 78 million dogs to take an important first step towards heartworm testing and prevention by making an appointment with their pet's veterinarian in April, which is National Heartworm Awareness Month.

Soles4Souls, the international shoe charity collects new shoes to give relief to the victims of poverty and collects used shoes to support micro-enterprise efforts to eradicate poverty. Sole4souls looks for companies in the apparel and footwear industry to partner with to battle for the lives of people in natural diasters and to combat poverty.

Soles4souls is partnering with Planet Flops who make flip flops made of natural rubber and from every one flipflop purchased one goes to provide footwear to an impoverish adult and/or child in developing nations. It’s called the “Buy one, Give One” campaign. Planet Flop also has the Buy one Plant program that plants a tree in the Brazilian rainforest for every pair of its flip flop sold on its website. Soles4Souls’ other two divisions, Clothes4Souls and Hope4Souls.

Beginning this summer, Farmers & Artisans, a unique Williamsville store offering a mix of local produce and products, will offer vegetable, fruit and flower shares. These shares are similar to traditional Community Supported Agriculture programs, with consumers subscribing to a weekly portion of fresh, local produce and/or flowers throughout the summer and fall seasons (June through October).

Wear Purple March 24 to Promote Epilepsy Awareness

Time to get dressed in your most stunning purple outfit! The Epilepsy Association of Western New York (EAWNY) is holding their major fundraiser of the year on March 24 from 6 p.m.-10 p.m. at Banchetti’s Banquet Hall (550 North French Road, Amherst). The 3rd Annual Wear Purple Fundraiser helps promote awareness of epilepsy across Western New York, as well as the many occupational, educational and family support services that are available through the association. Lavender is the internationally recognized color for epilepsy.

WGRZ-TV Meteorologist Andy Parker will emcee the event, which includes a buffet dinner, open bar, silent auction and raffle. Tickets are $40 each. Tables of 10 are $375. For tickets, call the EAWNY at 716-883-5396 or visit www.epilepsywny.org. Tickets also will be sold at the door.

Legislator Rath Marks Poison Prevention Week with Outreach Program

Erie County Legislator Edward A. Rath, III is hosting a District Outreach Meeting during National Poison Prevention Week (March 18-24) in an effort to educate adults and children about the risks presented in their everyday lives. Legislator Rath’s Outreach will include educational information on poison prevention, where to get help in the event of a poisoning, and answers to frequently asked questions.

The Outreach will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, March 22 at the Clarence Library, 3 Town Place, Clarence.

“This year marks the 50th anniversary of National Poison Prevention Week and through my Outreach we are continuing the program’s efforts of prevention and education. During the past five decades the number of deaths by accidental poisoning have dropped dramatically but we must remain vigilant and educate ourselves on how to prevent tragedies in our homes,” Legislator Rath said.
