News, People

Two local veterans have been awarded scholarships through the Gary L. Valeri Scholarship Program by The Resource Training Center of Amherst and S.E.R.V. Niagara. The scholarship, named after the former husband of S.E.R.V. Niagara’s founder who lost his long battle with addiction, will help train veterans to work as Credentialed Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counselors (CASAC).

Awarded 2014 scholarships are Army veteran Kevin Oliphant of Ransomville and Navy veteran Derek Roberts of Clarence. The scholarship will enable the recipients to take part in an 11-month program that, when completed, will qualify them to work with other veterans in a wide variety of settings such as clinics, hospitals, veterans facilities, halfway houses and the court system.

“Both scholarship recipients have stated that they want to help fellow veterans who struggle with addiction, and getting the certification would help increase their chance of securing employment,” said Monica Farrar, director of The Resource Training Center.
