Feds Raid North Tonawanda Doctor's Office, Home | News
NORTH TONAWANDA, N.Y. -- Drug Enforcement agents, along with the Niagara County Drug Task Force raided a North Tonawanda doctor's office. Dr. Matthew Bennett, 46, was arrested at his Clarence home early Friday morning.
Agents executed search warrants Friday morning at both locations. Officials say the task force and DEA has been investigating Dr. Bennett for over a year.
U.S. Attorney William Hochul says Dr. Bennett illegally wrote prescriptions, at times, in exchange for items like paper towels, toilet tissue, and even a gas grill.
According to Hochul, the drugs involved were Roxicodone, Xanax and more.
Hochul also says Dr. Bennett would write prescriptions without medical exams.
"Dr. Bennett would use his prescription pad much like a checkbook," said Hochul.
Dr. Bennett appeared in in Federal Court Friday morning. He is charged with distributing a controlled substance illegally. He was released on a non-financial bond and ordered to surrender his passport. The physician was born in Iran and according to federal authorities, received his medical degree in the Caribbean.
He is due back in court on August 16.
