Cheektowaga Dog Owners Seek Change In Law

CHEEKTOWAGA, NY -- "Why should we be different?" asked Tom Albrechcinski, who is leading an effort to get the Town of Cheektowaga to dissolve a long standing law which prohibits dogs, even those leashed by their owners, from being walked in town parks.

Albrechcinski's research indicates Cheektowaga (population 94,000) is the only major town in Western New York with such a prohibition in all of its parks.

"I'm a town taxpayer, ...why can't I go (to parks) with my dog? ...There's leash laws, and if all these other towns can handle the problem, why can't Cheektowaga?"

Albrechcinski lead a litter of fellow dog owners who appeared before the Cheektowaga Town Board Monday renewing a push be began earlier this year to allow dogs in the parks.

Fellow dog owner Linda Malobecki told the Town Board she believes dog owners would responsibly maintain their animals and clean up after them if they were allowed to walk them in town parks.

Nationwide Prescription Medication Drop-Off Day A Success

WESTERN NEW YORK - The Drug Enforcement Administration is reporting that 3,280 lbs. of unneeded medications were safely disposed of Saturday as a result of 7 drug drops in Erie and Niagara Counties.

The DEA is anticipating that well over two tons of drugs will be safely incinerated at Coventa in Niagara Falls. Medications collected outside of Erie and Niagara County won't be tallied until Monday morning.

The 15 Western New York Collection sites were part of the DEA's national effort to rid our homes and communities of medications that can be misused and abused, particularly by teens.

The Drug Enforcement Administration wants you to hand over those old prescription pills, cough medicines, and other drugs that have been sitting in your medicine cabinet for years.

The DEA's Mark Caverly says it's a public health initiative amid concern about the growing misuse of prescription drugs, especially among kids 12 to 17 years old.
