Nichols Students Named Squash City Champions
Recently, an historic moment occurred in the 100-year history of squash in Buffalo. For the first time, both Buffalo Squash Racquets Championships were won by junior players, both from Nichols School.   Nichols seniors, Michael Che and Pamicka Marinello, became the City Champions on Saturday, March 5. This win implies their positions as the best male and female players in the city.   Che thrashed a veteran of five city championships and Marinello triumphed over a former collegiate squash player at St. Lawrence University. Nichols freshman, Caroline Hogan, came in fourth in the women’s tournament. They all exhibited great sportsmanship and graciousness in victory.

Nichols School Prep A Hockey Team Earns Championship Title

On Monday, March 7, the Nichols School Boys Prep A Hockey team became Conference of Independent Schools of Ontario Champions! Nichols student, Andrew Poturalski ’12, scored 43 seconds into overtime to clinch the 6-5 win over Ridley College of Ontario.

It was an exciting game two in the best-of-three series. The entire team put forth an incredible effort to secure the coveted championship title.

Nichols School Student Composer Wins Honorable Mention at Competition

Nichols School freshman, Jason Zhou, won an Honorable Mention in the First Annual Persis Vehar Competition for Excellence in Composition. Corinne Damerau-Best, Nichols' Director of Choral and General Music for the Middle School, encouraged Jason to submit the sonata he wrote in her composition class as an eighth grader last year.

An event will be held at Canisius College on Tuesday, March 29 at 7:30 p.m. and includes a program at the Montante Cultural Center. Jason will have the opportunity to share information about his piano composition and himself. In addition, a CD recording of his work will be made at the Montante Cultural Center and provided to him following the performance.

Williamsville North High School Student Receives National Award

WILLIAMSVILLE – Congressman Chris Lee (NY-26) congratulated Williamsville North High School student Luka Jankovic of Getzville for receiving the Congressional Award Bronze Medal. Jankovic was presented with the award in a recent ceremony in Lee’s Williamsville congressional office.

“Luka should be very proud of this significant achievement and recognition for his service and dedication to our community,” Lee said. “Luka developed a greater appreciation of others throughout his volunteer work and professional development efforts. I congratulate him on receiving this award and thank him for his commitment to bettering Western New York.”

Congressman Lee Congratulates Clarence Student George Hermance on Acceptance to the U.S. Air Force Academy

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Chris Lee (NY-26) congratulated George Hermance of Clarence on receiving an Offer of Appointment to the United States Air Force Academy as a member of the class of 2015. Hermance received a 4.0 during the Fall 2010 semester at Clarence Senior High School and currently ranks in the top 10 percent of his graduating class.

“I’d like to congratulate George on this wonderful achievement,” said Congressman Lee. “His strong leadership will prove extremely valuable as he continues his education. I was pleased to recommend George to the Air Force Academy, and I know he will one day prove to be a outstanding officer.”

Two Local Pianists Invited to Perform at Carnegie Hall

Mark Chee, 16, has been awarded the Tri-State Award for Grade 10 Piano.  This award is given annually by the Royal Conservatory of Music of Toronto, and is given to the student in the Northeastern United States who has obtained the highest marks and completed all necessary piano, theory and music history requirements for each grade level.

As the prize winner, Mark has been invited to perform at Carnegie Hall in early February at the Awards Ceremony.

Jarod Yap, 11, has been awarded the Tri-State Certificate of Excellence for Grade 8 Piano and Grade 4 Violin.  This award is given annually by the Royal Conservatory of Music, and is given to the student in the NorthEastern United States who has obtained the highest marks and completed all necessary piano, theory and music history requirements for each grade level.

Local High School Coaches Become Certified in Concussion Reduction Training

Coaches from West Seneca East Senior High School are the first from a Western New York school to become certified in Primordial Strength Inc.’s Concussion Reduction Basic Neck Training as part of their football strength training certification, according to Primordial President Steven Helmicki. Concussion certification and explosive power endurance certification is available for all sports and can be taught in your school.
