People are social and we all highly value our interactions with friends and family. While you might not think the same of cats, people who have more than one can attest that having multiple cats can make everyone in the household — two-legged and four-legged — a little happier.

“Cats need stimulation, friendship, companionship, play and exercise, and these are all things that a second cat can help provide,” explains Dr. Jane Brunt, a veterinarian and executive director of the CATalyst Council.

Northtowns Pet Blog: The Back-To-School Blues

It isn’t just children who suffer from the back to school blues—pets can suffer too. After a long, fun summer, an empty house can be a difficult adjustment for pets. Pet Sitters International advises pet owners to become familiar with the signs of pet separation anxiety and how it can be treated.

Pet separation anxiety is a psychological term to describe the stress and anxiety brought on by separation from the primary pet caretaker. This issue can become a serious medical condition, with cases and their accompanying symptoms ranging from mild to severe. Most pet owners are familiar with the more common symptoms, but many may be surprised to learn that the full extent of the symptoms begin before the owner leaves and continues long after their departure.

Pets are the lights of their owners' lives. And keeping pets healthy is key to extending the warmth and love for years.

Dr. Ernie Ward, nationally renowned veterinarian, pet author and founder of the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, offers his “Top 5 Healthy Habits” for pet owners to help ensure pets stay happy and healthy throughout the year:

Outdoor Activities Come Naturally to Your Pet

Outdoor Activities Come Naturally to Your Pet

During the cold winter months, dogs are unable to enjoy the outdoor activities that put into use their natural senses to play, run and fetch. To protect themselves and their dogs from the frigid air, many dog owners avoid the outdoors — only bringing their pets outside for a brief walk, or to load them in and out of the car for appointments. Unfortunately this inactive way of living becomes the "norm" for dogs, and inhibits their intuitions.
